My Career as a Chemist

High School.

During the end of high school, I was still unsure of my career choice. I knew I wanted to do something in the science field, but I didn't know what specifically. So, I decided to talk to the HR about it. He referred me, and I was able to find out two jobs that I was interested in. It researched in chemistry or pharmacist, but I wasn't sure which one to choose.

Choice 1 : Become Pharmacist.

Choice 2 : Become Chemist.

After doing a lot of research on the job of a pharmacist, I realized that it wasn't for me. Indeed, the work of a pharmacist consists essentially in prescribing the right medication to patients. However, I prefer the practical side in the laboratory, which is not present in this job, than the theoretical side (prescribing).

I finally found my future career: research in chemistry. It is the one that corresponds to me the most because I am a curious and creative person and this work will stimulate these qualities. Afterwards, I was admitted to Cégep de Montmorency in the Science program. During the first semester, exams and assignments piled up, and I had to face a lot of work and exams during the mid-semester, but I also wanted to hang out with my friends. What should I do?

I decided to go out with my friends to take my mind off things. I got home around 1 a.m. and couldn't study for my upcoming exams. So, I fell behind on my classes, which prevented me from doing well on my exams. As a result of my procrastination, I had to retake some classes, especially my summer Biology class. My poor time management caused me to extend my time in Cegep.

After dinner, I gave my homework a cursory glance and made a snap decision about my time management I decided to stop hanging out with my friends and focus on managing my time. It hurt a little to put the parties aside, but I must take charge of my future. If I want to become a chemist, I need straight A's. Though, I started studying tonight and got several calls from my friends to go out, but I ignored them. The next day, I woke up for the first time with a lot of energy and was ready to give it my all. I studied with thorough. I now knew that time management was the key to success. During my last semester, I applied to two universities. The first one is the University of Montreal which offers a biochemistry program with an internship abroad. The second is the University of Sherbrooke which offers many research internships in different companies. Which one should I choose?

Choice 1 : University of Montreal.

Choice 2 : University of Sherbrooke.

University of Montreal.

I decided to go to the University of Montreal. During my studies, I had the opportunity to go to Japan for an internship. I am now officially a trainee, and I am doing my on-the-job training so that I can learn the ropes. After 6 months of internship, this experience allowed me to greatly improve my English and to meet new people. I want to stay in Japan, but I am not sure.

Choice 1 : Japon.

Choice 2 : Canada.

University of Sherbrooke.

I finally decided to go to the University of Sherbrooke. During my studies at the University of Sherbrooke, I had the chance to be a trainee in several research groups in chemistry. Being an intern allowed me to be overwhelmed by the work and learn the ropes. On-the-job-training allowed me to come in handy. The interns usually found an internship through the school. I wanted to do it because they could me get their foot in the door. This "test drive" allowed me to gain experience, which gave me a better chance of being hired at my job. Generally, the internships were paid. The internships also helped me confirm that this was the job I wanted to do. I met a lot of people who helped me on my way. With this experience, my CV allows me to go to great research companies such as ASTRAZENECA and Pfizer.

I decided to stay in Japan, but it was not easy. I tried to find a job first and applied everywhere I could but no one accepted. Also, finding permanent housing was not simple. Because of many problems, I lost a lot of money and finally decided to return to Canada.

After completing my last internship abroad, I decided to return to Canada to begin a master's degree at the university. This will allow me to become the leader of a research team, and to have a premium wage. After graduation, I quickly found a job in a company. I had the opportunity to work on about ten research projects. I had the opportunity to work on the Covid-19 vaccine. When I was 30 years old, I started thinking about my future retirement. Indeed, I liked my job very much, but there was still the drive of work. As time went by, I started to set aside money every month because I learned that the pension money was very small. However, it was very difficult because I also had to pay the mortgage on my new house. What should I do?

I preferred to keep my money than to put some aside because I thought it wasn't so bad. A few years later, when I retired, I completely regretted this decision. Today, I live very badly. I eat almost always the same thing, and I don't do anything all day. I wish I had gone back in time to make the right decision.

Setting asides were not easy at all. However, it is because of all these sacrifices that I was able to retire. I have seen people retire, but it was harder for them. Indeed, some had to do drudgery during their retirement.
